FAQ's

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding our software and services. If you don't find what you need here or have a feature request, feel free to contact us!

What is Vigilant

Vigilant is AI-powered monitoring software that runs in the background on a desktop device. It periodically scans the screen for inappropriate content and sends a notification to a trusted accountability partner if something is detected.

Who is this for?

Vigilant is designed for:

  • Parents monitoring their child’s screen time

  • Individuals seeking personal accountability

  • Spouses or trusted partners supporting each other in recovery

How does it work?

The software is meant for users to have a sense that someone is "always watching". The software doesn't provide constant monitoring as that would drain the battery quickly, rather it scans the users screen at one point randomly every minute for pornography or concerning content. If concerning conentent is detected, the accountabilty partner is notified via email and an image that has text redacted and the image blurred is uploaded with other helpful user information to the accountability partner dashboard for review.

Do you have a mobile app?

We don't have an app for mobile devices yet, but are currently working on one. To incentivize our first customers, we will be offering a lifetime locked price for the first 1000 users that sign up. With the development of the mobile app as well as inflation, our prices will go up, but not for our first users!

How do I install it?

Detailed installation instructions can be found here. Create an account on this website first, then go to "Plans & Pricing" on our menu to pay for your subscription. Following that, go to the  "Software" page to download it to your device.

How accurate is it?

That depends on the sensitivity set. The higher the sensitivity is set to, the more false positived will be flagged. If a low sensitivity is set, less false positives will be flagged but some true concerning content might not be flagged. Additionally, using the browser extension will increase accuracy.

Why am I getting lots of false alarms?

Setting the sensitivity to "Highest" or "High" can return more false positives. We recommend setting the sensitivity to "Low" or even "Lowest" for the least amount of false positives. The downside to setting it to the lower sensitivies is that some explicit material might slip through the cracks.

What can it detect?

  • Hentai - hentai and pornographic drawings.

  • Porn - pornographic images, sexual acts.

  • Sexy - sexually explicit images, not pornography.

Does the user know they were flagged?

By default, no. The user is not notified unless you enable user alerts in the settings.

How do I reset my password?

The password to start and stop the app from monitoring is the same as your account password on this website. If you need to reset your password, click "Login" or your name at the top right of this webpage. Click "Logout" then "Login" again. There should be "Reset Password" button there.

Does Vigilant use facial recognition?

Yes — if you enable it and your device has a webcam. It helps determine who was at the screen during detection. This feature is optional and can be set when starting the software.

How often is the screen scanned?

You can choose to scan every 20, 30, or 60 seconds, depending on your balance of monitoring sensitivity and device performance.

Does Vigilant record or save everything?

No. Only screenshots with detected content are saved. All detections are blurred and text-redacted locally before upload. Regular activity is not recorded or stored.

Can I adjust the detection sensitivity?

Yes. You can choose which content types trigger alerts, how frequently the screen is scanned, and whether the user gets notified.

Can users uninstall the software easily?

No — Vigilant includes app deletion prevention. The software requires downloading a second uninstaller application and can only be removed after logging in with the admin account.

How does the accountability partner get notified?

They can choose to receive email or upgrade their plan to get SMS notifications instantly when something is detected or when the software is started/stopped.

How many people can I have on my plan?

Up to 8 users. For individual plans, one user with unlimited devices and one accountability partner is available. For family plans 8 monitored users with unlimited devices and one accountability partner.

Will it slow down my computer?

Vigilant is optimized to run in the background without disrupting normal use. You can set scan frequency to balance performance and power use.

Which devices does Vigilant work on?

Vigilant is currently available for macOS and Windows desktops/laptops. Mobile versions are in development.

Why not just block websites?

Blocking software can be bypassed or lead to false positives. Vigilant is based on accountability, not restriction. Knowing someone they trust will see what’s happening helps users make better choices long term.

What does the extension do?

The extension increases accuracy when analyzing images preventing less false positives. It passes individual images to the app to be analyzed on every page load as well as repeatedly during videos and gifs.

Do I have to use the extension?

The extension is not required, the backup screenshotting method is used whenever the extension is not connected. Connecting the extension does increase accuracy leading to less false positives.

What happens if a user disconnects the extension?

When the extension is disconnected, the backup screenshotting method is used for continued monitoring and notifications are sent to the accountability partner soon after disconnection. This allows for the accountability partner to check in and see how the user is doing.

What browser extensions are supported?

Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox are all supported browsers. When an unsupported browser is used, screenshots will be used instead. The safari extension can be downloaded on the Apple app store, and the other extensions can all be downloaded on the Chrome Web Store.
